Test prep takes too much time and is ineffective
Summary
Our teachers feel tremendous pressure to prepare their students to do well on district and state tests. In response they spend considerable time weeks before the test on test-like items, teaching test-taking strategies. This effort has little payoff in increasing student achievement and students learn nothing new. How can we help teachers turn test prep into learning?
Strategies
Turn test prep into learning
This strategy provides teachers with instructional materials and guides for using them to enhance students learning while preparing them for high-stakes assessment.
Learning from mistakes and misconceptions: supporting teachers
Feedback is important guiding any system; in education it is often weak. The method of diagnostic teaching has been developed through research as a way of teaching which contributes clearly to long term learning and which promotes transfer from the immediate topic to wider situations. The key aspects of this method are the identification and exposure of pupils misconceptions and their resolution through conflict-discussion.
Work at policy level to broaden assessment
High-stakes assessment that matches your goals will help all aspects of your program move forward. The assessment tasks will help teachers by showing clear targets they understand, act as a motivating focus for professional development, and in time justify the adoption of better-aligned curricula.
